Q: What kinds of parrots are okay for apartment or condo living?

A:  Some good birds for close quarters living are:

  • Parakeets
  • Cockatiels
  • African Greys
(once they learn to talk they prefer speech to screaming)
  • Poicephalus parrots, such as the Meyers and the Senegal parrot
  • Green cheek or maroon belly conures

These are all relatively quiet species of parrots that make good companions.  But remember, each bird has a unique personality that may be different from the normal for that species.

Q: Why won’t my male canaries sing?

A: Male canaries sing to attract mates or company. Many males won’t sing if they can see another canary. Try separating them so that they cannot see each other. Also, many male canaries won’t sing during their molt. This is a physically stressful time for them, so they will often just sit quietly on their perch to save energy.

Q: My bird likes looking out the window, can I keep his cage there?

A: Birds can suffer in 3 ways from being near a window:

  • Overheating from not being able to get out of the direct sunlight.
  • Drafts from open or improperly sealed windows.
  • Being frightened by outside predators (real or perceived), causing injury from thrashing to escape the predator.

Let your bird watch the outside show only under supervision or keep him back a ways from the window and let him watch from a distance.

Q: Can my parrot eat human foods?

A: Yes, with a few exceptions. Your parrot will benefit greatly with a variety of foods, such as fruits (remove seeds, many have toxins), cooked rice, cooked pasta, cooked or raw vegetables, and most other foods. DO NOT feed your parrot chocolate or avocado; also, only tiny portions of salty or sugary foods. A balanced diet of a quality seed mix such as Abba Parrot or pellet diet such as Pretty Bird or ZuPreem, along with these human foods, will be healthy and beneficial to your parrot.

Q: Do I need to raise the room temperature if I own a parrot?

A: Parrots do well in temperatures that are comfortable for people. Normal temperatures of 68-74 degrees F are very good for your bird. Avoid extreme fluctuations in temperature and drafts, and your bird will be comfortable.

Q: My finches are laying eggs in their food dishes. What kind of nest should I put in the cage for them?

A: Most finches prefer a closed nest. They are available in many variations including wood, bamboo, and wicker. Put in a couple different types to give them a choice. If there is more than one pair in a cage, make sure there are more nests than there are pairs to reduce or prevent fighting. Make sure to also provide nesting material such as cotton fiber or coconut fiber that is safe for the birds.

Q: My cockatiel will start flapping and squawking in the middle of the night. I’m afraid he will hurt himself. Why does he do this?

A: This behavior, known, as night frights is fairly common with cockatiels, especially the Lutino mutations. There are mixed opinions as to what causes these episodes. Most common are that either nightmares or a light or reflection from a passing car scares the bird. No matter what causes them, they can be dangerous. Your bird could injure itself or break a bloodfeather. A nightlight near the eggs has been known to prevent or reduce the severity of the attacks. If your bird starts to thrash, turn on a light and talk calmly to him until he calms down. Then make sure he is physically ok.

Q: Do birds need to bathe?

A: Yes, all pet birds from the tiny finches to the huge macaws, should be offered baths on a regular basis. For the smaller birds a shallow bowl of water offered weekly should suffice. Many of the parrot species prefer to be sprayed. Use only a spray bottle that has never been used for anything but water. If the bird doesn’t respond to spraying, try running the vacuum cleaner you spray it. (Don’t laugh, it works!) There is something in the sound of the vacuum that triggers the bathing response in birds. Don’t give up if the bird doesn’t appear to enjoy it at first. The baths are important for the birds psychologically and for feather health. Make sure that the bird is not put to bed wet and is kept out of drafts until it has dried completely.

Q: How many pounds of gravel should I put in my aquarium?

A: As a general rule of thumb we recommend a minimum of 1# per gallon of tank size. To better anchor plants and decorations and to create a better bacteria field, I recommend 1.5# of gravel per gallon. More won’t hurt either.

Q: How many decorations should I have in my aquarium?

A: For most tropical fish, I prefer a well-planted tank with many hiding places for the fish to escape. The more secure the fish feel, the more they will stay in the open where they can be enjoyed. If there are only a few hiding places the fish will stay either in those places or very close to them. When safety is easily reached, the fish will stay out knowing that it is there. For most cichlids and larger fish you may want to use rocks and wood to decorate to prevent these fish from doing their own redecorating.

Q: About a month after I put fish in my aquarium the tank got cloudy and the fish started dying. What happened?

A: This is typically known as "new tank syndrome". When a new tank is set up, there are no beneficial bacteria to break down and digest the fish wastes that are high in ammonia. As the ammonia increases the tank will become cloudy and fish will begin to die. Adding a product such as Cycle to your tank with the fish will introduce the beneficial bacteria that your tank needs to stay healthy and prevent new tank syndrome.

Right Click to Download Answers to Hamster Questions:

Q: Can I keep more than one hamster together?

A: Teddy/Fancy/Golden - These Hamsters prefer to live their lives alone. They are naturally asocial. Males and females come together only during mating and then separate.

Dwarf Hamsters on the other hand are more social to each other and usually can be kept in small groups successfully.

Q: What essential items do I need to keep a hamster happy?

A:

  • A home - 10-gallon aquarium with a screen cover or similar size cage or Habitrail unit.
  • A wheel for needed exercise. A plastic exercise ball is also a great way for your pet to get out and explore the world and exercise.
  • Aspen or pine bedding.
  • Water bottle and ceramic dish.
  • Small wooden chew sticks. Hamsters have teeth that continually grow, so they need to chew on wooden items in order to maintain good dental health.
  • Varied diet of seeds, dried fruits and vegetables. Great treats include:
  • Mealworms or crickets for protein.

  • Yogurt drops.

  • Cheerios.

  • Alfalfa cubes – available in a variety of flavors.

  • Dried papaya.

Q: What can I do if a mother Dwarf Hamster doesn’t feed her babies?

A: You can try to feed kitten milk replacer with a capillary tube (available from a Veterinarian). An eyedropper is too large. But because of their size, this is seldom successful. To prevent a problem, do not move or handle the mother or babies and she will normally take good care of them.

Right Click to Download Pets for Small Children:
Q: What kinds of small animals are good pets for children?

A: Hamsters are often good pets. They are nocturnal and would prefer to sleep during the day and play at night. They should be kept singly and need to be handled carefully and regularly or they can become nippy.

Gerbils are less nippy, but much faster if they get away. Most enjoy gentle handling. They can be kept with more than one to a cage, but remember nature may run its course!

Guinea pigs are somewhat larger and tend to enjoy handling their owners. The will "talk" to their family through squeaks and squeals. They should be kept singly.

All small children should be supervised while handling small animals, for the safety of the child and of the animal.

These animals are all available on a regular basis and are easy to care for.

Right Click to Download Answers to Rabbit Questions:
Q: Can I keep 2 bunnies in one cage?

A: Normally, rabbits are solitary animals that would not get along together. For breeding, only put breeders together for short supervised periods of time. Rabbits can do some damage to each other if they want the other out of their territory. Occasionally 2 rabbits will live their entire lives in a cage together, but this is nor normally the case.

Q: What type of veterinary care does my rabbit need?

A: A rabbit doesn’t require shots or regular visits to the vet. Watch his teeth and nails to see if they need clipping. If they do, a quality pet store or vet can take care of the clipping at a very reasonable price. If you notice a change in the rabbit’s stool or actions, have it checked by a vet as soon possible.

Q: Can rabbits be trained to use a litter box?

A: Most rabbits will learn to use a litter box very easily.

Q: How do I train my rabbit to use a litter box?

A: Often rabbits prefer to use a corner as a bathroom. You want to place the litter box in the spot, which your rabbit has chosen. Use a non-clumping litter in your litter box. Suggested litters include these pelleted varieties: Critter Country, Pellet Mania, Aspen Supreme, Kitty Soft and All Pet Pine. Keep some of the soiled litter in the box until the rabbit begins using it.

Q: I am thinking of purchasing a prairie dog. What would I need to feed him?

A: A good varied diet for a prairie dog would consist of: lab blocks (for rodents), monkey chow, L’Avian guinea pig mix, Fabulous Fruit mix, plenty of hay (daily), treats, alfalfa blocks, and Pretty Bird parrot pellets. This should be supplemented with fresh produce, especially corn on the cob and carrots.

Right Click to Download Answers to Home Issues/Cleaning Questions:
Q: What is available to get the urine out of a carpet?  Anything with protease or liptease organisms?  Should it say "contains no salmonella"?

I have an area about 6 x 8 feet that my cat urinated on around the edges, so I want to replace the padding, treat the carpet, bleach the cement, and hopefully it’ll be OK. Any suggestions to product and/or process?
Thanks for whatever you have for me.

A: The product called Simple Solution is an excellent stain and odor remover. It is safe to use around children and pets. It can be used full strength from the bottle or mixed with water to use in a carpet-cleaning machine. With cat urine, I would recommend full strength. Our customers have reported excellent success with Simple Solution.
